Drawing With Pastels
Mar 6th, 2008 by Jean Littman
Pastel crayons or sticks, consist of pure pigment combined with an inert binder, such as gum arabic, gum tragacanth, or methyl cellulose. There is often a chalk or gypsum component present.
Pastels are available in varying degrees of hardness, with the softer varieties being wrapped in paper. The colors are simply drawn onto the artwork surface, which is usually paper.
Unlike some other media, such as oil pastel and wax crayon, pastel has always had a high culture status (similar to oil and watercolor paintings).
